This King Vulture is a beautiful South American vulture I found at the Carolinas Raptor Center. I surrounded it with aztec imagery to enhance the South American flavor of it's habitat. The delicate looking cream feathers on it's back I found fascinating considering it's diet. A wonderfully designed bird!Walter Stanfordhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14797980132670689205noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9175063270274831011.post-47579233218698749642012-08-20T20:16:00.000-07:002012-08-21T05:35:43.351-07:00Ferruginous Hawk

I visited the Carolinas Raptor Center in Huntersville recently and saw this Ferruginous Hawk among others. It is the largest hawk in North America. My goal is to capture a bit of previous glory in the images of these wounded birds. I found this beautiful creature at the Asheboro, NC Zoo. I had never seen one before and knew I had to paint it when I did. It is native to Africa and has wonderful color and markings and is also known as the "snake eagle". It's name is french and refers to the acrobatic maneuvers in flight it is capable of. A wonderful find and I hope you enjoy it.
This exhibition runs through June and includes 70 works from the 3 pastel societies of NC; the Pastel Society of NC, the Appalachian Pastel Society and the Piedmont Pastel Society.
