The Pirate

The Pirate, Charcoal and pastel

This piece was done around 20 years ago and after facebooking it, thought I'd blog it as well. It's just a good ole pirate and bird as I imagined it then. Enjoy.

Eater Of The Dead

Eater Of The Dead, 13 x 16, pastel

This King Vulture is a beautiful South American vulture I found at the Carolinas Raptor Center. I surrounded it with aztec imagery to enhance the South American flavor of it's habitat. The delicate looking cream feathers on it's back I found fascinating considering it's diet. A wonderfully designed bird!

Ferruginous Hawk

Ferruginous Hawk, 10 x 20, pastel

I visited the Carolinas Raptor Center in Huntersville recently and saw this Ferruginous Hawk among others. It is the largest hawk in North America. My goal is to capture a bit of previous glory in the images of these wounded birds. Enjoy.

The Bateleur Eagle

The Bateleur Eagle, 13 x 17, pastel

I found this beautiful creature at the Asheboro, NC Zoo. I had never seen one before and knew I had to paint it when I did. It is native to Africa and has wonderful color and markings and is also known as the "snake eagle". It's name is french and refers to the acrobatic maneuvers in flight it is capable of. A wonderful find and I hope you enjoy it.

Mocha

While at the 2012 Pet Expo in Charlotte I painted this beautiful shepherd mix named Mocha. I cropped in close to capture his strong features. I started with a quick sketch as shown.

Resting In The Mist

This is the third piece from the Cumberland Rec area of TN near Chattanooga. It is a beautiful little setting I found on my second trip to Greeter Falls. This lies above the main falls and I just loved the deep rich colors where the water covers the rock. It is 24 x 30, oil on canvas.

Mac in pastel

This is a little Corgie/shepherd looking rascal we own. This dog can jump straight up in the air from a sitting position. I combined a pose with him smiling with one in late afternoon sun to increase the contrast. Enjoy.

Dillon

This dog belongs to a friend in Black Mountain. It is a Sheltie-Papillon cross-breed. A Sheltion as my friend calls it.  Enjoy.

Titmouse In Gold

These wonderful little birds live all around my house. There is a dogwood tree just outside my kitchen window with bird feeders so I see quite a variety. This is pastel on Rives BFK printmaking paper, 10 x 11.

Hayley

One of my good friends in Charlotte has a little Schnauzer and this little dog runs out to greet me every time I drop by. She had just had a trim so she was clean cut.  Enjoy.

Truck Of Many Colors

Here's an old army truck I found at an homeplace soon to be demolished. I appreciated the weathered colors across the body and kept the background simple so as to not distract from the truck.

Old Brady

Here's one of several dog portraits I'm working on. This is an old Lab and I had to get on the ground late one afternoon to get the reference photos for this. I loved the collar how it curled around at the bottom. It is pastel, 13 x 13.5.

Blonde Rock

Pisgah National Forest is a popular source for many of my paintings. I love the variety of color from the rocks underneath the water. This particular section of the Davidson River had this large yellow-like rock and if it wasn't so cold, I'd love to wade across it. It is oil on canvas, 14 x 18.

Sticks And Stones

Few years back I was hiking around Jenny Lake at Jackson Hole, Wyoming and came across this scene with the rocks and limbs under the water. Enjoy!
